Bio

Welcome to Family and Consumer Sciences! The courses in this area are in the Human Services and Education and Training Career Clusters. I teach a variety of hands-on courses that will benefit students in their personal life, and prepare them for child related careers, as well as careers in the fashion, and housing or design industries. I am privileged to teach classes that force students to become responsible, reliable, resourceful and confident. This is my 10th year at SHS and I have come to expect great things from this student body! I truly enjoy watching students' unique talents and giftings emerge and blossom as they complete real world projects in each course area. I enjoy interacting with youth and children in each age and stage of child development. I believe that learning experiences should be real, relevant, and rewarding. Parenting is the most important job that any of us will ever have, and preparing students for that most important venture is rewarding. It is my sincere prayer that SHS students enter into the parenting role prepared for the challenges and rewards that lie ahead. I always smile when students realize the enormous responsibilities of that role with 3 very important outcomes: First, they know they need to delay that role until they are physically, emotionally, and financially prepared and in a committed healthy relationship with their spouse. Secondly, they develop an appreciation and respect for their own parents and the sacrifices they have made in their behalf. Finally, they have skills that will better equip them to balance home and career in the 21st century or actually launch them into a child related career in child psychology, pediatrics, education, social services, quality childcare, or family counseling.

. I also teach Fashion to provide SHS students with more hands-on experiences in other career options. There are many careers in these areas that offer 21 century opportunities in technical areas such as textiles and green careers, in business ventures such as merchandising, or careers for creative and artistic designers, writers, or stylists.

Each year since the Career Prep course has been required for graduation I have taught at least 2 classes of freshmen. This is a 3 fold valuable course to high school students. Students will conduct indepth career research and explore their own interests, values, and aptitudes with a focus on their future and the choices they need to make now to embark on the path they desire for themselves. Students will be trained in the responsible and productive use of the everchanging world of technology. The third piece of this course is learning to manage financial matters proactively utilizing on-line learning, simulations, and guest speakers from area financial institutions. I enjjoy the opportunity to meet the incoming freshmen and introduce them to the all of the vital content that I am so passionate about.

I, myself, am the very proud parent of 2 outstanding SHS graduates who are now parents themselves. Robert and his wife Mari Leigh and their precious sons, Jeremiah (9) and Jacob (6) and Joseph (4) and John Robert (2). Sharon and her husband Shannon Harbin and their boys Koltyn (14) and Konnor (12) (Of Tot'N'Teen and Pre-K fame) reside in Grant. My husband, Richard works as a welder and fabricator making custom smokers and grills for HBT Smokers in Guntersville. He spent most of his career as an auto mechanic, but prefers competitive bass fishing. We both play the bass guitar in our praise and worship team at church.

I am an active member of ACTE. I was awarded the honor of Alabama Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year in 2012. I have recently served as the Past-President of the Alabama Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. As a board member of the Alabama Association of Career and Technical Education I have taken a leadership role in promoting FACS and CTE in Alabama as the we prepare students to be college and career ready in the 21st Century.
